Virginia Beach Weekly Vacation Rentals

7 Days of Summer in Virginia Beach
Summer brings feelings of happiness, relaxation and renewal. Something about a cool breeze on a hot summer day resets the mind, body and spirit. A wet drink on my lips, great book in my hand kicking back in a beach chair listening to the surf roll in…now that’s the best! Is one week a year too much to ask for?
Summer may run a season but I anticipate my beach vacation week most of all. Those seven days define my Summer.
Looking back, my family week at the beach brings back the fondest memories. The beach finds its way into you, releasing a year of tension, stress and distractions. A wholesale change of pace lets the mind refocus on what is important in life…family, friends, fun times. The beach lets you forget the demands of the daily work routine and settle into a new pace, if only for a short while. The beach heals so savor the moment!
So why is 7 better? Let’s take a look!

7 Historic Hotspots in Virginia Beach

Cape Henry Lighthouse

Cape Henry Lighthouse is the first federally funded public works project of the newly formed United States government. It was authorized by George Washington and overseen by Alexander Hamilton. The Lighthouse is situated near the “First Landing” site where English settlers first set foot on their way to settle in Jamestown. Built with the same Aquia sandstone as much of Washington, D.C, the lighthouse guided sea travelers to safety for almost 100 years. The distinctive black and white striped “New” Cape Henry Lighthouse was built in 1881 but remains closed to the public. The new lighthouse is open to the public. Climb the tower for a gorgeous view of the Chesapeake Bay. All climbers must be at least 42 inches tall.

The Old Coast Guard Station

Walking along 24th and the Virginia Beach boardwalk, you may notice something that appears to be oddly out of place. Sitting between two giant hotels that stretch into the sky is a tiny little outdated looking house. What could it be? The Old Coast Guard Station is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as being a Virginia Beach landmark, preserving the history of both the United States Life-Saving and later the Coast Guard Services. It is a tribute and memory to Virginia’s coastal communities and the shipwrecks of bygone eras. The Old Coast Guard station holds 1800 artifacts and over 1000 photos of United States Life Saving and Coast Guard Services, along with a library filled with books, papers, and oral histories. When I went inside there were two floors housing all of this information, they called it the Upper and Lower Gallery.

The Dewitt Cottage

The cottage was built in 1895 by Bernard Peabody Holland, who called it “The Brick House.”   B.P. served two non-contiguous terms as mayor of Virginia Beach, from 1906 to 1908 as the newly-incorporated town’s first mayor, and again from 1913 to 1916.  His wife did not like the sound of waves breaking on the shore, so B.P. built her a larger home across the street. Purchased in 1909 by Cornelius Dewitt, the cottage was expanded in 1917 to twenty-two rooms and remained in the Dewitt family until 1988.  The house is on the Virginia Landmarks Register. With fourteen-inch-thick brick walls, twenty-two rooms, a basement and an attic, this house is an example of an early typical beach house. The cottage is now home to the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum and the Back Bay Wildfowl Guild, Inc. (a non-profit organization). It is located on 11th Street on the boardwalk.

Francis Land House

Built circa 1805, the Francis Land House / Historic Site and Gardens (also known as Rose Hall) is owned by the City of Virginia Beach and is located at 3131 Virginia Beach Blvd.  The house reveals the fashions and values of Princess Anne Residents during the early National period and served as home to Mr. Land, a War of 1812 militiaman. The Land House flourished as a busy Plantation located just off the Pine Tree branch of the Lynnhaven River.

Military Aviation Museum

Located at 1341 Princess Anne Road Virginia Beach. The Military Aviation Museum is home to one of the largest private collections of World War I and World War II era military aircraft in the world. Each of our planes has been beautifully restored to its prior military condition, using original parts whenever possible. Most of the planes are airworthy and flown at the museum during flight demonstrations and at air shows throughout the year. Some being the last flight-ready aircraft of their time, and all of them being one of a kind. Come out and see the heritage and machinery of World War I and World War II!

The Legends Walk

Virginia Legends Walk, at the 13th Street Park between Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Avenue, honors Virginians, by birth or residence, who have made a significant contribution to the nation and the world. Celebrated Virginians include Edgar Allen Poe, Ella Fitzgerald, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Pearl Bailey, Booker T. Washington, Arthur Ashe, Patsy Cline, Thomas Jefferson and Captain John Smith.
