Shamrock Marathon 2019
March 15 - March 17
Virginia Beach Resort Race
The Shamrock Marathon is the oldest running road race in Virginia Beach! Come out and participate in the Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, 8K, Challenges, Youth Events and More! Join 25,000 runners from all 50 states and around the world.
The annual Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend, first held in 1973, has expanded to become a St. Paddy’s Day tradition in Coastal Virginia. Our three-day event includes a sports and fitness expo, race distances and challenges to accommodate all ages and skill levels, and a huge finish line celebration on the beach. With six events, there is a distance for everyone to choose from: the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon, Shamrock Marathon Relay, Anthem Shamrock Half Marathon, TowneBank Shamrock 8K, Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile and Leprechaun Dash. Runners who want to make the most of their race weekend can participate in one of the two special challenges that the weekend offers – the Dolphin Challenge or the Whale Challenge.
The marathon course takes you south from the Virginia Beach resort area across Rudee Inlet–the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean–and through stately neighborhoods and the Camp Pendleton military base before returning north along the oceanfront and past more welcoming residential areas. It then traverses tree-lined Shore Drive adjacent to First Landing State Park on its way to Joint Expeditionary Base, Ft. Story. In Ft. Story participants will pass by the site where John Smith, Christopher Newport, John Rolfe and the other Jamestown colonists first landed in America in 1607, and by Cape Henry light house–the oldest standing light house in the United States. The course then heads south again for a finish on the world famous Virginia Beach boardwalk, just past the majestic figure of King Neptune, and with the beautiful Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop.
